Writing Speeches

We all love to get up in front of a crowd and wing a very important speech right? No? Well then maybe you need to hire the services of a professional who has the experience in writing a good speech and even writing an informative speech, the two not always being the same. Writing speeches can be a chore if you don’t know where to begin. Why waste your time and money when you can find an experienced writer with the ‘writing a speech’ know how. You can even find free writing speech templates and tutorials on the Internet.

Writing for speeches doesn’t differ that much from any other writing. Your aims are the same; engage your audience, share information, convey a point, and don’t bore them. Simple right? Well… The most critical thing to remember is that unlike the written word your audience can’t go back and re-read that last line. It is important to be creative but not to lose your audience with too many twists, turns and vague references. Some steps to take first:

· Pre-write. Jot ideas down after giving ample thought to the purpose of your speech.

· Analyze your audience. Why are they listening to you? Even if you paid them to or tied them down to listen to you, you will still want to know their motivation.

· Decide on your topic and your focus. Will this be informative, argumentative or descriptive?

· Do some research. If you are there to inform have something with which to inform.

· Write a draft. Start with an introduction. If you will be introduced then make sure you will not be repeating what has already been said.

· Gain your audiences’ attention, in a good way. A joke or story might work in some venues and not in others. If you ‘had them at hello’ then you can usually keep them.

· Conclusion. You will need to conclude and the sooner the better. Don’t wait for the audience to start checking their watches and shuffling in their seats before you get the hint.

For an example of my last point I have to tell you a humorous story. At my daughters high school graduation ceremony one of the guest speakers ignored the last rule to the point where there was shouting and then clapping and then cheers. The audience was trying to get her to end but she mistook the signal as enthusiasm about her speech. She even commented that she found that to be her favorite part of her speech too! Don’t do this. I think she has been blackballed from speeches, talks and casual conversations from that day forth.
