Desktop Publishing
Software desktop publishing is a booming business. Everyone is in to desktop publishing from the grandmother in charge of the family newsletter to the home-based business entrepreneur. You can find desktop publishing classes in almost every community based continuing education program. You can even buy desktop publisher software and desktop publishing programs at your local grocery store! This web site can help you sift through the many programs available and help you make a wise decision.
What is desktop publishing? It is the use of a computer to create documents that can be printed. Specialized software can be used to add copy and graphics to the document, which is then outputted to a printer or typesetting equipment. Sounds pretty simple right? Looks can be deceiving. Although there are many desktop publisher software programs out there some can be so complicated you will want to throw it out the window after hours of frustration.
Most of the top desktop publishing software programs generally come with hefty price tags. The budget-conscious must usually sacrifice most of the advanced features and flexibility but there are some affordable alternatives. There are even free programs which are really only for limited personal use.
The advent of computers and desktop publishing software has enabled the aspiring artist to create presentations, brochures, posters, business cards and a wide variety of materials needed to run a business, advertise a garage sale or make personalized birthday cards!
Some tips to keep in mind:
·
Don’t double space after every sentence. PC’s have taken
away the need to do that. Those who have been brought up on computers
instead of typewriters might not know what we are talking about but
the rest of us who do be warned. Spacing for visual effect is all
taken care of, with the exception of courier. It
even looks like it came from a good old typewriter. If you
use this font, keep on double spacing.
·
Avoid the temptation of using multiple, and we mean multiple, fonts.
One or two or maybe at most three but any more than that and it looks
like you hired your eight year old to handle the task.
·
Don’t be afraid to use bold or italics to make your point but
don’t overdo it either.
·
Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Don’t and you
will look like your eight-year old hired his five-year old brother
as an assistant.
·
Look at alignment and lonely little widow words with a practiced eye.
Use someone else’s eyes as a back up. A crisp layout makes all
the difference.
·
Use graphics, photos and art with the proper amount of coarseness so
it will not only print well but also copy well.
